Helma's Folded Hipster Purse
Submitted by hepabolu on Tue, 2006-05-02 13:57.

I wanted to try the Hipster PDA after having unsuccessfully lugged around the A5 version. It's not easy to get 3x5 cards in bulk here (i.e. Netherlands), so I decided to start with plain paper first. I'm carrying this around in my backpack so I needed something to keep them "safe" and then I found the diagrams to this purse in an origami workshop I attended. Great fit. It has two internal pockets where I store my stock in the back pocket and the "current" ones in the front. The flap folds into the front pocket which I use for my "inbox" card. The pen fits in there as well.
Sorry the picture is not that good, it's made with my phone camera.

Origami
That is just perfect! Do you know if I can get instructions for the origami anywhere? Thanks for sharing!

I "Googled" up this:

Thanks!
Thank you, Ygor! I had tried googling it too, but the best ones I found had only one pocket:

The one with two pockets I found (and now lost the link for) was very clumsy. I will definitely give this one a try, thanks again.

It could be a work of art to wear like a designer purse of handbag, or the inner folds could be pasted into a notebook moleskine style! I love this.
ORIGAMI PURSE
I found one other Origami purse/"bag" that is a "boxier" style at the fabricorigami site:
(go to your Link 1) PDF --when the url comes up, substitute 64 for 61 in the url line and you will find the other PDF of instructions.
Many instructions for that site have been taken down, but this was working on Satuday May 20.

Wonderful site!
As soon as I saw the 'credit card' holder I knew I'd have to adapt it to hold 3X5 cards.
Very, very simple -- it just took a bit of tinkering and studying the photo to make one. I didn't have any fabric stiffener handy, so I used contact paper (leaving the backing on) for strength and waterproofing for the side 'pocket' pieces and some left over index-wt paper for the 'body.'
My finished version is 5.5" X 4", and holds a dozen index cards easily. If anyone wants to make one the same size, you need to start with:
2 8.5" squares (side pockets)
and one rectangle 7.5 - 8 (the length determines how much extra space you have at the spine) X 12"
Again, thanks so much for the url!

Now that is someone with a passion for paper. Very beautiful. I"m not sure i'm up to that challenge, but I love the potential. The beads are a nice touch.
Origami hipster purse
(I love that you took this picture with a phone.) What kind of paper did you use to make this? Very impressed, and just a little inspired. (-: So far my origami has been limited to hats, boats and paper planes that my toddler keeps requesting. This would be quite the venture.

Origami purse
Thanks for all the comments.
The diagrams for this purse are not online somewhere as they were drawn by hand by two Dutch origamists who "invented" the model. I could ask for their permission to publish them, but it would require a redraw in any vector-based program. I've tried my hand at that in the past and realised I'm not that good at it, especially when it starts to become 3D.
That said I must say the diagrams are not really for beginners (i.e. the ones that think that the simple paper hat are difficult), I folded the purse once during a workshop and when folding this one I had to take my original purse apart to figure out what I had to do. The diagrams are not that good in explaining.
The paper I used is simple brown wrapping paper that is also available in colors, this one is blue and green, with the smooth finished side in blue. It starts out with a single piece of paper of 1m by 30cm.
If someone is really desperate to have one we could make arrangements, just mail me in private.
Origami Purse
The origami purses are such a fun idea! I guess they were featured in THREADS magazine put out by Taunton some time back (no reference date found).
I sent a private e-mail to you, Helma, to inquire further about your Folded Hipster Purse.
I also found some other "origami" look purses of a different styles elsewhere on the www and some instructions--there is a gal that explains the folding of origami pretty well--her name is Glenda andher site is www.fabricorigami.com

I think I figured it out
I went back to the link I posed earlier and looked at the pictures and instructions (such as they are) and I managed to produce a small, 4 pocket "purse" out of a piece of letter-sized paper.
I'm going to tinker with numbers and proportions to try and determine the size of the starting piece of paper based on the size of the desired end-pocket.
Contact me offline if you want details sooner. Otherwise, I will post them when I figure it out.
I finally realised that
I finally realised that there was more than just a link on the page ygor posted and scrolled through the diagrams. I'm definitely going to fold this one. It looks easier than mine, but it takes some crafting to put the "envelopes" in a casing, which you also need because otherwise there is no closing flap.
Mine is folded from one piece of paper, inside and outside.
Origami card case and wallet
This post got me interested in origami--hadn't realized there were so many useful things you can make with it.
Here is a link to a card case that looks like it might be helpful with the hipster PDA:
http://web.archive.org/web/20000510143118/library.thinkquest...
And a little wallet--After reading about the possibilities of smart cards being hacked and the encoded information on them stolen, I thought it would be useful to make this up with a layer of aluminum foil incorporated.
http://web.archive.org/web/19991106002753/www.cheesypeas.dem...
Haven't made either yet myself as my first efforts at origami have reminded me of the reason I never could get interested in it years ago--absolutely no spacial intelligence. I tend to get halfway through a simple project like an evenlope and get turned around and can't figure out where I am and then abandon the project.
Thanks for the origami links!
I would like to thank you for the links. I have tried most of them, but none turned out to be the way I needed. These are some attempts of mine:

I have found a plastic pocket for my hipster in the meantime and I am very happy with it. I have just submitted the picture to the Kit Gallery, let us hope it shows up soon. I will give origamis another try later on. :)
