OOo Draw Page Settings
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2006-02-15 19:00.
Hi,
I am trying to design my own two-page/week calendar layout, and have two slides in OOo Draw, one for Left and one for Right. The problem is when I modify Page settings for margin, it modifies both slides instead of just the active one.
Is there a way in OOo Draw to do Right and Left pages?
Thank you.

Page margins in OOo2 Draw
Sorry for the quick reply.... I often set my margins at .25", and then use guidelines to set the "safety space" for the rings. It's not really a problem, and it gives one complete control over placement (set your snap). See the Widget Kit for my prepared margins, guidelines and layouts.
all my best,

Thanks - Re: OOo Page Margins
Using the guides helped, but I am still figuring out measurements and such. Like when I put a horizontal guide line at .25" is that from the margin, or from the edge of the sheet? Also, what settings do you have for your snap grid? Seems the default settings are too coarse.
Thanks again for your help.
Jeff
PS - thanks for the awesome work you put into the DIY Planner. Simply magnificent.
OOo Page Margins
I always set my margins to zero. Then I place a very thin turquoise1 dashed line at 5.5 inches on a landscape page. I then place a .25 inch guide line on the side of the page that is not near the rings, and on the rings I place a guide line at .5 inches away from the edge which has the rings. I then put a guide at .25 inches on top, and .5 inches on top. Please Note I treat the turquoise line as an edge of the two pages.
Pretty darn close...
...And you're actually using the margins I think I set for the very first D*I*Y Planner. I finally opened up the ring margin another 0.1" because it gave a little extra "comfort" when using the form, but it wasn't absolutely necessary.
all my best,

One More Thing
OOo Draw when I print will be upset because of the margins. I have found that if I choose the trim option that it prints correctly for me, but your printer may print differently
OOo2 Margins
Took a quick look at my original InDesign guidelines. Guidelines are set at 0.25" for the outside of the form (the non-ring side), and 0.6" for the inside (where the rings go). As for snapping, I snap to objects and snap to guidelines, but *never* to grid -- that never gives me enough precision. Once objects are snapped together I use the arrow keys to nudge a consistent number of steps vertically. In Illustrator, it's 2 nudges from subheader to box below, and usually 4 between significant items, such as from the bottom of a box to the next subheader. For OOo2, experiment with the WK to see what I used; unfortunately, I can't remember at the moment. :-O
Hope this helps, and I'm glad you like the kits!
all my best,

In Draw, the snap line
Jeff, in Draw, the snap line positions are offsets from the margins you have set, not the edge of the paper. For example, if you set 0.25" margins, a vertical snap line set at 0.25" would be one half inch from the edge of the paper. This confused the heck out of me at first but once you get the hang of it, you'll be fine.
I vary my snap grid dimensions depending upon the objects I want to draw. I experimented with snap range but found the default of 5 pixels works best for me.
You might also find setting the position directly (right click the object and select Position and Size) helpful and often more convenient than snapping to a grid. Same deal applies here... positions are distances from your set margins, not the edge of the paper.
Re: OOo Page Margins
Thanks to all of you for the tips.
I have a somewhat working version, but will be applying the suggestions you all gave to tweak it a bit. I may post what I've done up here for some feedback. I'm working on them from scratch, so they don't match the Official D*I*Y templates, but if anyone finds them useful, I might be able to redo them in D*I*Y fashion.
