.3mm Uniball Signo RT Gel question
Submitted by Lex on Mon, 2008-02-11 18:49.
I use the .3mm Uniball Signo RT Gel for writing on very thin paper like Moleskines as it dries so fast there's no bleed-through to the other side of the paper. I'm on my first pen and the last 1 inch of ink writes almost pencil gray. It's not nearly as dark as when it was new. Also seems less smooth writing. Surprised me with a whole inch of ink left. Might be expected with the last few millimeters. Any experience from the brain trust?

I am confused
What is the question ?

"I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out there in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." (Calvin and Hobbes/Bill Waterson)
the question is
If anybody who uses this pen has experienced the same troubles. Is it to be expected with this pen, or was this perhaps just a defective one-off problem.
Sorry, I've never used the pen so have no brains to offer the trust.

Last sentence
I described a problem with a product and my last sentence sums it up. I could also have said, "Has anyone else experienced the problem?"
go with the flow
I'm assuming that you want to know why the ink in your pen has gone from dark to pencil grey.
3 possibilities I can think of -
a. the ink has 'separated' in the pen into the colour and the base, which is unlikely but possible. I've found this happens usually when a gel pen is either too hot or too cold, causing a chemical reaction in the gel.
Did it get frozen sometime? Or have you used it to stir coffee?
b. the ball of the pen is partially blocked with congealed gel and only a tiny amount of ink is getting through. This often happens if I write on something waxy or write over a flaky/dirty/painted surface. Try cleaning the ball of the pen Very Gently by scribbing on a rough paper. That may clear it. If it doesn't, then you may be stuck with it as it is.
c. you have used most of the ink and the ink container is stained, so it looks like you've got plenty left
Thanks
Thanks Katrina. It isn't 'a.' It's always in a pocket and I stir my coffee with a Waterman. ;-) There is no ink supply separation or staining of the exterior of the refill. I wonder if the .3mm tip is more likely to clog up because it digs into paper as it is so very sharp. Mystery.
It is very common for the
It is very common for the 0.38mm Uniball Gel RT to Fade and Thin Out during the last 20% of the ink supply.
I've used 23 of them from beginning to end with this consistant performance.
It is a design problem with the Ink that Uniball has failed to acknowledge and address.
Thanks!
Update: Manufacturer guarantee
Sanford Brands (parent of Uni-ball) emailed me in response to my question to them, and stated their complete customer satisfaction guarantee. They offer replacement product if I mail the pen back, and reimbursement for postage. That's good customer service.
Does not happen
I've used a half dozen of the Uniball Signo RT Gel 0.38 tipped pens, they've never done anything like this to me. When they run out, right before total failure, it begins skipping then doesn't write after a few lines, and that's it. No graying out.
