Two Pages per Month v1.2.2i

This is the second in a (hopefully) long series of cross platform applications that should ease the load on the folks who make calendar templates. This program generates two-page monthly templates based upon the settings you choose (dates, margins, and so forth), and uses the basic D*I*Y Planner look and feel.

This is multi-platform software. Below are download links for pre-built, static, binary applications for both Windows and Mac OS X as well as the source code. Through the Nordic Magic of the Qt Libraries, both of these applications were built from the same source code. This source can be built on any platform supported for Qt 4.3

Here's a shot of the Mac version:

And here's the Windows version:

Basic instructions:

  • Be sure you have the font "Blue Highway" installed as it is hard coded into the application
  • Use the "Page Setup" button to set paper size and margins
Use the calendar widget and the First/Last Month selectors to set your page range.
  • Set your line width to look good on the display.
  • The "Print" button will send the page through your printer drivers.
  • The "Save PDF" button will create a PDF file.
  • INTERNATIONALIZATION: Two simple changes -- the addition of translation files, and the addition of a locale string in parentheses in the title bar. The string in the title bar lets you know what your system is looking for. The translation file name is "DIY_Two_Page_Month_LOCALE.qm" For the translations to work, the string in the title bar has to match the LOCALE part of the translations file and the translation file needs to be located in the same directory as the application. A slight renaming of the translation file may be necessary as the locale consists of both a language and a country indicator.

And here's the French version:

And here's the Dutch version:

Please let me know if you encounter problems. More to come....

Version History

  • 1.1 Margin Control: I was not happy with the margin control through the printer/page setup controls, so I added margin controls to the window. I am very happy with how this turned out. Adjusted the Zoom: I bumped the minimum zoom down to 1% so that you can get the whole page onto smaller screens.
  • 1.1.1 A few cosmetic tweaks on the left hand page. Added licensing info and source code bundle
  • 1.2i International Support !! French, Spanish and Dutch initially
  • 1.2.1i A typo that would have prevented the translation fils from being read it and actually adding the first two translator files - French and Dutch
  • 1.2.2i Add a PDF button and adjust the colors to be consistent with other templates - both dynamic and non
  • License:
License granted to me (Dan White) by Douglas Johnston to duplicate the D*I*Y Planner forms look and feel under the Creative Commons NC-ND License. The source code is declared under GNU GPL.

    Language:
That's part of the Nordic Magic. It should be multi-lingual. Please let me know if you have any language related difficulties

    Current known problems:
On the Mac, there is an issue with PDF's and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Use Preview to view/print any PDF's you create. Based on some of the feedback at Big Nerd Ranch about PagePacker, I suspect Apple's PDF drivers. Part of the issue is the embedding of fonts, but that is not the entire problem.

Can this program do Hipster PDAs

I use a Hipster PDA version of the DIY Planner. Can this program work with index card sizes?

    Thanks in advance.

It can work with any page size your printer can handle

because it uses the printer's page definitions. For something like an index card, you will probably have to do some custom page setup definition. I had to on my printer. Most printers these days have this feature in their drivers.

    5 1/2 x 8 1/2 printing problems

Great idea, but I'm not able to print the calendars on 5.5" x 8.5" paper, using my HP DeskJet 832C (using Windows version). When I go to page set-up, there is no option for that sized paper. I know that in Word I can specify custom sizes, but your application doesn't seem to allow me to do so.

Help! I would really like to use this app.

    printer settings

Try accessing your printer's properties/profile via the control panel... then create a custom size in that - make sure to save it.

Most printers allow you to do something along this path in order to allow for printing on odd/non traditional size pages. :)

    Hmmm...

tried this, but unsure how to actually set a new size and save it...

    Custom Printing

I also have the HP Deskjet 932C and have used the custom printing option, which allows the setting of a nice array of paper sizes. In order to use this option, the full HP software must be installed, not just the drivers. Here is the link to get the full version software (930-enu-xp.exe) from HP:

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/dj1162/dj-20433-1/930...

Basically, I recommend going into "Control Panel - Printers" and deleting your HP Deskjet 932C printer(s) before installing the software. This program installs the drivers and HP printing software. To do custom printing, right click on the HP Deskjet 930C Series icon in the system tray (right bottom of desktop) and select "Change Default Print Settings". Then go to town.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the pointer

I am confident that most any printer in use today can do custom paper definitions. Working together like this is what make this site rock.

    Custom paper sizes on HP832C

Thanks for the page numbers. It says that it's possible, but when I try it there is no "custom" option for paper size.
I used the system trouble-shooting application, and it said that if I upgraded to Windows XP (which I had done quite a while ago) the new driver is from the XP and I may have to download a driver from the manufacturer.
I checked the HP site, and used their driver check utility. It said that I already have the best driver installed. I've just sent an email to their support to see if they have any ideas.
What's crazy is that when I use Word, I am able to set custom paper sizes.

    Custom Printing

The custom printing option shows up after installing the HP full software for your printer, as opposed to just installing the lite version (drivers only). Hope this helps.

    Full software for HP 832C

Thanks for the advice. I originally had the software installed, but it must have come off when I had to reinstall my system quite a while ago. Can I use the orginal CD that came with the printer? It was for Windows 98. Now I have XP installed. If not, where can I download from? I've only been able to find the drivers on the HP site.

    New Version: v1.1.1

One tweak: cosmetic changes to the left hand page
And two extras: I created PDF Classic size calendars from January 2007 thru December 2009 - one with Sunday as the first day of the week, one with Monday.

Unless there are any other problems or complaints, I am calling this finished.

    A few outstanding issues:

    • The Mac PDF problem is (I think) a problem with MacOS. The notes on PagePacker at Big Nerd Ranch say that a fix should happen with Leopard, so I am going to wait and see. Using Preview is an acceptable workaround for the moment.
    • Page size is still handled by the printer drivers due to a the way Qt implements that feature. The PDF page size is set by the printer driver. There is a "Custom Page Size" setting in Qt, but the problem is that there is currently no way to set the size of a custom page other than through the printer driver. If I "disconnected" the printer drivers, we would lose the ability to create just about any page size -- especially Hipster/index card size. Qt says this will be fixed in the next minor release (4.4.0)

I will be moving on to another template -- Two pages to the week. I made a promise.

    Mac PDF issues

I tried printing from Preview. It didn't work.

So I saved the file from Preview (October.pdf just October 2007, 2 pages), reopened it, and tried to print. No luck.

I e-mailed the saved pdf file to a friend with a pc. When she opened it, the first page of the month was blank exept for the notes. She was able to print page 2 for me. It came out small, but I don't know if that was her printer setup or something else.

The Two Pages per Week works fine from my mac. This makes me suspicious that it isn't Mac OS.

Thanks for making these. I'll have to find a PC to print my months from. Oh, and I like being able to adjust the margins.

    Try printing directly

Go straight to the printer, not a PDF. It seems to work for me that way. I believe this is a bug in ther MacOS PDF driver

    Months from the Mac

I forget to say that the first way I tried to print was directly from the program. It doesn't work. It says it is sending to the printer, but nothing comes out.

Ha! I did a screen capture of preview, then printed that from a graphics program. I'm happy.

    Quirks...

    Hi ygor-
First off, thanks again for taking so much time to produce a product like this. It is a boon to all of us here without your skills, and all you get are pats on the back for your troubles. Kudos, indeed.

I have a couple of comments on what I saw in v1.1 (Windoze)- for the record I haven't tried 1.1.1.

I found the printing of the planning column on the left was so light you could barely see the box or the lines. Looks fine on screen, but not once printed. Everything else printed OK, and the lighter date squares for previous/next month seemed fine also. Perhaps this is one of the "cosmetic tweaks" you've hit on already.

My second issue is one I think was already mentioned in a previous beta version, but I can't find the post now. I used your app, and Acrobat Professional, to make a pdf of the months I wanted, then printed them from Acrobat rather than directly from your app. My printer won't duplex, so I had to do it manually. I printed my odd pages and they worked great. When I flipped my pages and printed the evens on the back side, all the pages had a box printed around the perimeter of the entire page. So, one print run was fine, the next wasn't, same program, same session, same settings. Odd.

I didn't have time to go back and play some more, but I'll get the latest version and do so.

All is well in the (D*I*Y) World

I've given v1.1.1 a whirl and it seems to have taken care of both issues. I printed out a set through Dec 08, double-sided and didn't get any funny boxes or anything else out of the ordinary. I can't say what caused the printing problem, but you seemed to have it licked. For my eyes, the lighter lines are still a hair too light, but they are better - I can see them without a bright light now :). I can certainly live with it.

I do really like the shaded area on the edge of the notees box - gives me a nice delineated place for my checkmarks.

    Great work, ygor!

    Modification of PDFs?

A general question to the D*I*Yers...

A previous poster asked about an option to add in things like holidays, birthdays, etc before printing thier pages. Not something you will be adding to your app anytime soon, as you said, and I wouldn't expect you to.

Can the multi-page PDF files be opened up in something else to add those bits manually? I think in Adobe Illustrator you can only open 1 page at a time to so so, then you have to print them one at a time, or take the time to remerge all the pages into a single document again. Is there something that lets you see and edit all the pages?

    Reese
    ====================
    I never finish anyth

    one possibility...

that would not take a lot of time would be to output a graphic page instead of a PDF. Then you could edit to your heart's content.

The other stuff will eventually arrive, but I want to do a few more basic templates first.

Adobe Illustrator Multi-page PDF Editing is A-OK!

I finally had some time to diddle around with Illustrator, and when you try to open a multi-page document, you open the specific page you want to modify. When you save it, after making any changes, it puts the modified page back into the full document. Easy squeezy!

So, if you are fortunate enough to have access to the Adobe suite of software, you can use ygors software to produce a PDF of a full year's worth of pages - monthly, weekly, whatever - then put all your birthdays, holidays and so on in before you print them.

    Great workaround

I will be adding this feature to the applications, sooner or later.
Right now, I am building and refining the toolset I use for creating them so that new ones can be created quicker and easier.

See how quickly new ones appeared after I got the first one working ?

    File this under: "Interesting but..."

Just tried out the progam and somtething immediately jumped to my attention---I couldn't set the start month to this month (September 2007) only December 2006.

No offence but I have no need or desire to print out 18 pages of months that have already happened.

Is there a particular reason that the start month is stuck at not advancing past Dec. 2006?

    Steven

PS. I think I'll steal the slider idea for adjusting the onscreen text scaling for a future project. ;-)

You can set the start month

You can set the start month to the current month, but when you advance it to December 2006, and then try to change the year, it tries to set it to December 2007, which being in the future, it doesn't seem to let you do. I'm not sure why this would be however, especially for those who may want to start printing planner pages for the following year early.

If you want to set it to September 2007 though, you can do it by first setting the month to september, then you can advance the year by one.

re: You can set the start month

OK, given what your post said and by poking around a bit I found the confusion.

Even though the Start Date box with the up and down selection arrow looks like only one field it is actually two separate fields that share the same selection widget.

When set at December 2006 I thought that clicking the advance button would roll things over to January 2007. What I really was doing was advancing only the month field and since there is no month after December it wasn't doing anything.

Perhaps the month and year field could be separated out into two fields with their own selection widget (end date would need to be altered too)? Or perhaps the month could roll over to January---that way I could have deduced that the field was actually two separate parts.

    Steven

    Talk to the Qt Trolls

    That is a QDateEdit widget
I agree that it takes a bit of getting used to, but it is what I have in the library to work with.

If you think THAT one is bad, try the full blown QDateTimeEdit one. Distinct fields for day, month, year, hour, minute, second.

    Some explanation

"Start Month" cannot be after the displayed month.
"End Month" cannot be before the displayed month.
You have already seen that month and year are distinct fields that are manipulated separately.

Would it be easier if I set the initial settings different ? They are set to go a year back and a year forward from "NOW".

As far as code "stealing", I am ironing out details about the licensing of this site combined with a GPL for my source, but I will be posting the source code. It is pure Qt for cross-platform portability. If you register, we can communicate by e-mail

    What was the update?

    Ygor-
In the tracker list, it said the article was updated (Sept 27), but I can't see what you changed? Was it just the addition of the source? When you update an article, could you please add an addendum, with the date, as to what you changed? I like your idea of updating the articles rather than creating new ones, but it would help if we knew what was changed, and when. :-) Thanks.

    -Jon

    How's that ?

I believe it was the source addition, and you are absolutely correct in that I should document it.
    Thanks for the reminder.

    Missing Dates

    ygor,
I was working up a 2008 monthly planner for my wife over the weekend - gotta love waitng until the last minute - and noticed some oddities.

For the record, I was using v1.1.1 since I have no language issues. Perhaps you've noted and fixed this, if it's even a problem on your end.

1)Throughout the entire year there are random dates missing on the pages. It does seem like the 20th is usually gone, and then more random dates at the end of the month. Sometimes just a day or two, sometimes 3-4 days in a row. I can email you the PDF if you want it.

2)On one trial, I also had problems with the reference months in the bottom left corner - again a number of missing days. I didn't save that file, unfortunately.

In all cases I outputted to a PDF (with Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional) rather than directly to my printer. I have a suspicion that it is the PDF conversion, not your app, since it doesn't always happen. If I rerun the app, it is just as often perfectly executed. Odd.

Let me know if I can give you any more info, or the pdfs.

Box around 2nd half of month?

This is one of the most awesome things I've come across! I'm making planners for the residents of a shelter I volunteer at, so I used the application to decrease the outer margins so I could print 2 months/page and simply cut in half and fold.

I noticed that it would look even better without the rectangular border around the 2nd half. Is this removable? If not that is totally fine and I will just leave it.

    Thanks!

    What box ?

    I see no box

If you will look at your screen shots above, you will see a glimpse of the box on the right-hand side/page right in your screen shots. I don't know if the latest version keeps these boxes or not, but I have seen them in this template.

    -Jon

On screen, but should not be on page

The application draws a rectangle around each page to show the edge of the paper, but that is only drawn to the screen (I am 99% certain) and not to the PDF or printer

    OK, I found it, but...

The box is the page edge.

You should not see it when you print.

What are you doing with it that it is showing up ?

    booklet making

I get the box when I make a booklet, with CocoaBooklet on my Mac, and yes, it's with the latest. I am just making pdfs, so I haven't tried printing just yet, to see if printing a plain calendar would do it...

Aha! Just did some more testing...

I did a preview before printing, and as I flip from page to page, I can see the left edge of each page change. It looks like the line is drawing right on the very edge of the paper. In a normal printout, that is outside the printable area, but when you make booklets from pdfs, it will show up. I'm about to actually try to print a full-bleed page, and see what happens (also, try printing an A5 page on A4 paper--maybe this will show up the problem...)

    -Jon

    pdf booklets only

Well, after some playing, I couldn't make the lines appear on any direct printout, only on pdfs that I made into booklets, when even the very edge gets put in the middle of the paper. I suppose that's both good and bad. I bet it also only appears on templates that are two-pages wide. Are you using this box to create the boundaries to tell the program where the second page is?

    -Jon

    No, it is a mistake

No, it is a mistake undocumented feature :)

Unless it is causing anyone serious grief, I am not going to publish a new version right now.

It's a one-word-in-one-line-of-code fix. At the top of the DrawRightPage method, I set the pen color to black. It should be white.

[added later] Now that I consider it, I will add a toggle control for this. Printing the "paper edge" could be useful in n-up printing for cutting and folding guides.
    -----------------------------------
"I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out there in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." (Calvin and Hobbes/Bill Waterson)

    Me too...

I had the same problem when I made my wife's planner, ygor. Both with the older version and once I DL'd the new one. As Jon said, it only prints on the even pages, not both.

I didn't use the "print to PDF" button - I have Acrobat 7.0 Professional, so I choose the Adobe PDF Output driver from my printer list. Perhaps that's where it comes from. Running Win XP Home SP2, doing PDF creation with Adobe CS2.

Anywho, I had to open each individual page in Illustrator and delete the box to print clean pages.

    Custom Planner Pages

I haven't read this entire blog, but wanted to put in a plug for calendarsquick.com where I stumbled across a goldmine last month! I've been on the hunt for a way to custom design my own planner pages and have access to make my own changes, adding recurring dates like birthdays. The operator of this site is very responsive to requests. He wrote back to me right away and said he'd be interested in what I had to show him and to say. I submitted my Word file of a 3.75 X 6.75 planner table I had made. He made a PDF template of it with all the dates filled in for 2008. We e-mailed back and forth to perfect the new two page layout now found on his site. He is interested in making an excel file template available in the future, so people could make their own changes, add appointments, etc. His site allows you to add one item per day before downloading, though he plans to allow more items in the future. I'm sure he'll do a lot more 2 page templates in the future, now that he has this basic one. Membership is like $9.95 per year, with access to all of his templates. You can download a sample for free in several size options. Take a look, I think you'll be please.

    I hope you enjoy it

I am adding to my templates constantly and they are all 100% free

    template pdf

I am having some trouble with this template program. Every time I print to pdf, the saved pdf has a blank screen. I have tried all types of different options. Not sure what else to try. I just need the 1 up classic 2008 monthly calendar with the same margins as the core package.
    Thanks

    I have tried countless times

I have tried countless times to get a simple classic size printout using the dynamic templates, and have never been successful. I've followed all the instructions I could find, but between my laser printer at work, and my printer at home, nothing has worked, either printing directly or first to pdf. Someone made and posted links to full pdf versions of their modified templates, but I would just like the full year using the default. My printer works best using 1up as well.

    Troubleshooting...

You are welcome to contact me directly for some troubleshooting assistance.
Start with make and model of printer and what operating system version you are using.

    Landscape template?

First off, I want to thank you, thank you, thank you for all your work. These templates are wonderful and I love them.

If you are looking to maybe work on a different template (or add a new feature to this one), I would love to be able to print a month calendar on the vertical (landscape orientation), so that the weeks aren't split up. For example, see pages 7-8 in the diyp2_hpda_1up.pdf. I like to print the month on one card (front and back) and with the layout of the current template, I see the first 3 days of the week and then have to flip it over to see the last 4 days. With the landscape orientation, you still have to flip the card over but the weeks aren't broken up, so you see the first 3 weeks of the month on the front side and the last 2 weeks on the second side with the notes. This would allow me to see the entire week at once which would be really helpful.

What you have done is incredible, though. Thank you again!

Can't print or save to pdf

I have tried to print this directly and it doesn't keep the margins properly, also it doesn't follow the printer driver's commands to print duplex (manually), i.e. it is supposed to print every other page and then it gives you an alert to reinsert the pages facing the opposite way. Also if I choose save to pdf, all I get are blank pages in the pdf. I have a pdf printer installed (CutePDF), but the print dialog can't seem to find the driver for it, only the driver for my main printer. I'm using Win Vista Home Premium with an HP Deskjet F380.

Thanks for any help you can give in this matter.

French translation - Two Pages per Month v1.2.2i

    Hi everybody,

First, I would like to tell how amazed I was when I discovered the site 3 weeks ago.
Great great job and very nice community here !

I am on my way to bluid my first DIY A5 planner, with GTD inside.

    Here is my point.
The french translation is brilliant and will make my planner building so easy ! But (there's always a but) it seems that a typo went into the " DIY_Two_Page_Week_fr_FR.qm " file.
Indeed, we should read planification with 1 (one) n, and no 2 (two).

If you want me to scan and upload a page from a french dictionary, tell me so.

Greetings to all, especially Douglas Johnston and Dan White

    Claify, s'il vous plait

I do not understand the error you found.

Please tell me exactly what is in error and what I need to change to correct it and I will be very pleased to do it.

    [edit: second look]

Do you see a misspelling of "planification" ? Do you see "plannification" ?

The screen capture (above) has the correct spelling, I think.
I will check the application itself this evening.

    Screen capture inside

Hi, thks for your quick reply.

The typo in seen in the application, and in the generated PDF as well.
I have seen the image above and can't explain the reason of this typo (in english, however, there is two n).

Follows two screen captures of the " Two pages per month-Win.exe " and " Two pages per week-Win.exe "

    Greetings.

P.S. : You may want to change " Stoppé " by " Quitter " as you usually quit (quitter) an application rather than stop it in french.

    Yes, you found a typo

I will be sure it is corrected.

    Any answer ?

    Hello Ygor,

I don't know if my two previous posts have been read or just erased by an anti-spam filter.
Anyway, i'd appreciate some answer (forum ou email).

    (1) I did finish the french translation of the DIY planner v3.0 A5 core package, and I'd like to upload it. Is it possible ?
I suppose I need to be logged to do so ...

    (2) Will I get any conformation of my account, because I cant login with the login + pass I created.

(3)I may create another account but I would like to prevent some spammer tagging. So I didn't dare to create a new one yet. The communication with you being quite hard (spam + no answer).

    (4) As you may have found, the typo is hard coded in the DIY_Two_Page_Month_fr_FR.qm and DIY_Two_Page_Week_fr_FR.qm files.
    Copy & paste from : DIY_Two_Page_Month_fr_FR.qm
     2 P l a n n i f i c a t i o n m e n s u e l l e :

    Copy & paste from : DIY_Two_Page_Week_fr_FR.qm
     8 P l a n n i f i c a t i o n h e b d o m a d a i r e :

One n needs to be erased. Any hint of the fix date ?

    Thks for your time.

    Done !

About the translation, you mean that you have the words & phrases for this file ? --> hxxp://www.diyplanner.com/diyp_official/diyp3cl/diyp3_core_a5.pdf

If so, i'll be glad to get those, in order to see how you translate "Docket time" (page 49) because I am not used to use that word.
Anyway, I did the translation and I am OK to upload it wherever it is good to.

    Cheers
guiliguili or shoud I say terremer ;-)

    I did the translation. Some

I did the translation. Some of the most up to date translations have not been implemented yet because ygor has not yet had the time to add them to the full language localization files. I too do not understand the error your si, because I do not see it either.
