Rasmussen: Levenger's Leather Backpack or soho microfiber backpck

Leather or Microfiber

Ok i LOVE backpacks. the one that i have now i have had since august 2002, it still works but it is showing its age and lacks the compartments and pockets i want. i got it for free.

the Levenger's backpacks are PERFECT!!! but money IS an issue.

I would not be getting this except that my B-day is only a few days away.

OK here is my question. i want something that will last at LEAST 15 years with good care. But money IS an issue.

do i need to go with the one that is all leather to have this last that long or is the one that is leather trim capable of lasting that long with regular but careful use.

alternative laptop bags

Jigglypuff,

If you are looking at spending a couple hundred dollars, also take a look at Tom Bihn bags and Timbuk2 bags - both are well constructed and should easily last that long. warranties are great, as is service.

hmmm, did not consider

hmmm, did not consider these. although i am not looking for a laptop bag. i am looking for business backpack, you know, books papers, pens, wine notes, blah blah blah.

i will read up on them. but i will say on first look they are just not as pleasing to the eye as the bags from Levenger

Tom Bihn Rules

Jigglypuff,

I own a Tom Bihn Buzz bag. It's a sling back bag. While it's a laptop back, I have only carried my Macbook in it once. Currently, It holds my Nintendo DS, a book on Single Source documentation, my tarot deck, my Circa Hipster and pens, and wallet. This is what I carry to work with me on a daily basis.

It also holds one water bottle and my lunch. :)

I love Tom Bihn bags and they're not bulky or heavy like a normal computer bag. In fact, depending on your budget and what exactly you are looking for: I have an old Buzz bag (smaller size- was made for 12" Powebooks) that fits a 8.5 x 11 inch notebook, three books, and various pens and gadgets that I'd love to sell to you for cheep.

Let me know what you're looking for, and if you think a Slingback backpack would work!

thank you for the offer but

thank you for the offer but i do need a backpack style bag. slings, messengers, totes and so on are bad for my back as i tend to carry heavy items.

no worries

Jigglypuff,

Your quite welcome. Every connoisseur has their own taste. :) I'm sure that the levenger bag is perfect for what you need.

Microfiber vs. Leather

Jigglypuff,

The bags are identical.

However, to help with your decision, I would mention that the microfiber bag is significantly lighter than the leather version, without compromising durability. The structural components that receive the most wear are all in leather. Nonetheless, the all-leather version does a good job of dressing-up the traditional image of a backpack. ;)

If you have more specific questions about interiors or dimensions, just let me know.

Thank you,
Ryan

so tough.

Well, let me be clear that they leather bag is SEXY.

Sorry to be a bother, but just to clarify, given the same use, clear and so on, the micro fiber is expected to have the same longevity as the leather.

i ask because you said durability, would you say they would be expected to have the same longevity and durability or only the same durability.

oh its so tough. if i had all the money in the world i would just get both and call it a day. :)

oh one last thing do you know what the range of thickness for the full grain leather is?

well make that two last things. Water. Rain water, they may come a time or two when i am out in the rain with this backpack... if i get the leather, how much do you think it will be able to stand up to some New York City rain water.

Soho Backpack

Jigglypuff,

thanks for the bump ;)

[...] would you say they would be expected to have the same longevity and durability or only the same durability.

Longevity would have been a better word for the comparison. In my own experience, I measure a bag's longevity as a factor of the rate at which its components resist wear. The straps on both bags, and the seat underneath each bag are of identical durability, to aid in preventing abrasive holes or tearing.

You mention the rain in New York as a concern for the conditioning of the leather bag. When you make it indoors from such conditions, simply wipe down any standing moisture on the surface.

oh one last thing do you know what the range of thickness for the full grain leather is?

I am still waiting for an answer on this from our merchants. From observation, the leather appears to be about half of the thickness of the leather used on bag like the Stanley Traveler. Constructing it from this leather makes it much lighter than our traditional briefbags.

Happy Birthday! ;)

Thank you again. Order placed. more questions.

Thank you again. After reading this, and realizing that its really the leather one that I want, I ordered this and the Laplander. (Just my luck I had a 15% off coupon and then found a 20% off after my order was placed :) )

So here is my new question...

you mentioned the weight difference between the Micro Fiber, Soho Leather and Stanley Traveler but the website lists all three of them as weighing 3 pounds. website error?

I think you are right. Nonetheless, I'll run them by a digital scale tomorrow.

digital scale

Jigglypuff,

The digital scale I was to use had a bit of an accident, so it might take some time to get an accurate read of the bags. However, a simple first-person comparison orders the bags by weight: Microfiber, Soho Leather, Stanley.

excellent

thank you again for your diligence.

Happy Birthday! :D

I don't have that particular Levenger bag, but I do have a number of their leather totes and other similar bags. The quality on all of them is top-notch and should last quite a long while. I can't say they'd last 15 years since I haven't had one that long, but they are all very well made.

Since I also have Tom Bihn bags and love them, too, I'd say it's more a matter of the look of the bag itself that will tip the balance. I have had a Tom Bihn bag for over 14 years and it's still very useful. I haven't used it much these last few years, but it still looks good - not ratty or worn at all.

thank you!

I will be 27! yukk. I feel so old. but at least I can buy some nice things for my B-Day.

Well, if it comes down to looks alone Levenger would win hands down.

What someone needs to invent is touch internet, so that i can feel the fibers and get the one that feels the nicest. :)
