Hey, I just saw this article on about David Allen and GTD. I have to admit that I haven't read GTD yet, but after reading this article and everything y'all have posted about GTD on this site, I'm going to go pick up a copy!

I grabbed a copy from the library last weekend... I havent had much reading time but it is well written. :D

Are you going to take notes or buy the book? I opted for taking notes in hopes of being able to GTD in the future with those as reference.

I picked up the paperback

I picked up the paperback from Borders - had joined their free rewards program and they sent me a 20% off coupon. Now to read it and do it! :)

Have a question...

I found out about David Allen's GTD book through this site, but have been reluctant to read it for the following reasons:

1) lack of time (perhaps all the more reason to read it! ;)

2) I got the impression from somewhere that it is an office-oriented book (and since I don't work in an office setting, it wouldn't apply to me) GTD merely a productivity book for office settings? Or is it helpful to anyone? I should mention that I am a college student now, so that's the setting I "work" in.
Anyhoot, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but thought I'd give it a try.

GTD 4 University Students

There are some good posts on about GTD systems for university/college student, I wish I had known about GTD in college... Now I do work in an office setting but there is definitely application in any one's life, I've read posts by retail & sales people for instance. I encourage you to give it a go, even if you find just one thing that could improve your productivity, organization, life, etc, it's worth it right?

GTD, the book

You could always check it out from the library, or sit at the bookstore and just skim through it and see if it looks like it's worth getting.

B&N just sent me a 15% off coupon and I *might* use it tomorrow to buy the GTD book. So far, I've only read *about* the book and skimmed it briefly at the bookstore.

Oh dang, now my credit card has run off and is hiding in the corner...

It should be broadly applicable.

I'd agree that it is oriented to a work setting, but you could adapt the principles when you want a more structured approach to a busy life in almost any situation. Being in college would certainly qualify. I'm still reading through it when I have time (agree with no. 1!), but a lot of what Allen says makes sense. It's a way of focusing on the important things and being more efficient. That's what I need! :-)

Hey, thanks for the replies--I'm glad GTD is not just for "office people":) I checked out 43folders and found an article that applied GTD to college students--thanks for that suggestion, it was helpful. I also checked my library's website and they do have GTD, so I'm going to try an' swing over there sometime this week and check it out. Even if I'm too busy to read it all, at least I can skim over it and get some ideas.

After reading so much about GTD and its methodology I'm eager to get my hands on the actual book! Then maybe I'll understand how to use some of the DIY templates that were a mystery to me before.

GTD vs. Covey

I'm probably going to go with Covey, because from what I've read about both of them, Covey fits me more.



Check out Julie Morgenstern too. Her approach is sort of in between classic Covey and straight up Allen (GTD).

Do a search for 'Morgenstern' on this site and you'll see some of the stuff I've written about her in the past, especially the first half of this thread. That might tell you whether you're interested in reading her stuff too.



That sounds like the perfect system for me! Which one of her books do you recommend? She has a lot of books out...

Julie's books


Well, for basic time management, go for Time Management from the Inside Out.

After you've read that one, you would go for Never Check Your Email in the Morning for some detailed tips and specific strategies for particular time-related issues, especially work-related issues.

If you want to organize your space--as in your room/house/dorm, then go for Organizing from the Inside Out.

Those are the three of hers that I've read. I think there's one more that is basically the same as Never Check Your Email in the Morning--but it's an older version.

I got the most value from Organizing and Time Management.

You're welcome. All the systems have some merits, some aspects you can incorporate. Even if you don't like the system as a whole there are always little bits of useful tucked in somewhere.
