Thanks Ygor. I just got mine a few days ago. It's a neat little device. I wish I had one of these when I was in school but I'm a bit too old.

I'm going to check out the Wiki you mentioned but out of curiousity does anyone know if these can work with a Win PC? I'm in the market for a Mac but I just OC right now.

Newton size and document printing

It's a big taller and a bit less wide than a standard laptop, and at about three and a half pounds, it's a little lighter than most. However, since it was designed primarily for an educational market, this is one ruggedised machine. I wouldn't want to drop it from a high distance, but I wouldn't think twice about tossing it in a knapsack. (I hear roving journalists and travel writers really liked the eMate.)

As for printing, I tend to write my first and second drafts on the eMate, and then transfer them to my MacBook Pro in RTF format. I mostly use this machine for writing, so this isn't a problem. Things like contacts and calendars/tasks are synced with my Mac OS X apps, so I can always print them from there.

On the Newton?

No. Newtons don't have ADB, only serial--the Apple serial. It looks like ADB, but has a different pin arrangement and count. Serial was used for things like printing, modems, and yes, LocalTalk--the Apple-based networking protocol. ADB was strictly a keyboard and mouse thing.

However, oddly enough, there are also serial-to-USB converters as well. I had one of those, but since I resorted to Ethernet, I gave mine away.

Is it the usual ADB connection? If so, there are ADB -> USB converters out there. I have an older one by Belkin.

A couple options for printing

Personally, I always thought printing on the Newton was one of its powerhouse features (compared to the Palm that has none natively)

There are a few options.

1. Get an old Stylewriter or Stylewriter II or Stylewriter 1200. You can probably find one on eBay for nearly a song. They use the still-nearly ubiquitous Canon BC-1 or BC-2 cartridges, which, I believe, also refill easily enough. You get decent output from it, it's cheap enough, and semi-portable. ;-)

2. Get an older Localtalk Apple Laserwriter. You will get the absolutely best quality from these, and if you get a Laserwriter II series, you also get a printer with a high-quality printer head, and long life-span, but also nearly ubiquitous toner cartridges--but You need to be careful here. A IIg would also give you Ethernet as well as the older, serial LocalTalk, and would be useful for any computer. That's the one I would recommend getting. I had one for years, and it was a beauty! I ruined mine in our last move (somebody dropped it!) Downside here is that these things are _huge_ and heavy! Mine had slide-out carry handles!!!

3. Find a Newton Print Pack that converts from the Newton's serial to parallel. If you have an HP Parallel inkjet or Epson inkjet, chances are, it will work with it. However, these printers are getting rarer, and the cable is as rare as hen's teeth. ;-) I have two--hint, hint--so saying I can find them. If someone is desperate for one, I can sell one of mine. (don't want to sell both--even though my Epson died ages ago, and I still have a StyleWriter--I just hate to give up my last one...)

So, those are your options--but once you get a printer, you will probably find it useful.

To give you an idea of what you can do, with enough "hacking" I used to travel for months on end with just my Newton--did emails, too--but would write letters, and print them and envelopes right from the Newton. The Newton has one built-in letterhead--simple one, with just your name and address, but I created a custom letterhead that worked around that, and would print formatted letters, complete with my signature printed out. It was wonderful. Also, btw, this isn't printing, but I think the best fax machine I ever had was my Newton. It was reliable, and you could annotate right on the fax (including converting your handwriting to text) and send the fax right back. It was great for filling out forms and signing forms. So, if you can get a printer, it's worth it. ;-)

Smaller than a laptop

They were designed for the educational market, so they have a slightly-smaller-than-standard keyboard. Printing may be tricky unless you can find the proper cables and an old enough printer to play nice with them. I think most Newton/eMate folks work on connecting to their "real" PC and then go from there.

The Wikipedia article has a number of links for specifications if you're curious.

EDITED to add: there's a topic in the Bazaar about Newton memory cards (there is one slot on the eMates) though again, you need to find the right one.
