i was first introduced to

i was first introduced to the hpda concept by fullcontactgeek around february of 2005. i seemed to intuitively grasp its usefulness right away and since i have known fcg for a while, i was more open to his praises of the thing than if a stranger suggested it, for example…

i used it for a little while, not very efficiently, and it did serve some usefulness to me in terms of organizing the things i needed to get done and remember and plan for the future… but i found the same issues with the clip and the restrictions it gave, however minor they were when compared to organizational life before i used it.

then on november 8th, after my first hpda (using a simple clip and index cards) had been long misplaced partially due to decreasing usage… i caught upn fever… fcg had built a custom upn for me a month prior and at first i laughed, as many others have laughed at me since then even though i’ve only been using the upn a short while, tho i did carry it with me everywhere before i really started using it anyway, in case i became inspired to jot something down.

on the 8th, after seeing more links and pictures online and on fcg’s website, i was hooked… as i have seen from other stories online, it was as though i wasn’t ready to begin using the upn until my mind really grasped how functional and effective i could make it, as well as what i would use it for:

bill payment reminder and tracker
monthly and weekly planner sheets
expense and banking tracker
‘to do’ and all kinds of other lists
favorite pictures
tracking and goal setting for breaking bad habits (cigarettes)
temporary place for #’s, emails and urls scrawled while on the road
paper folder pocket for temp. storage of receipts and loose papers

i stayed up that first night until 5 am making templates in photoshop, not the greatest in design concept but good enough for me. im sure i will be adding new functions and adapting old ones as time goes on…

in order to reduce the thickness, i used blank index cards and printed the templates i would be using in conjunction with each other on both sides of the corresponding card. for example, my to do list for the month (daily list is on a different card), with portrait oriented lines using 5 grid lines per inch in photoshop, was on the front of one card, on the reverse side of that card i printed page 11 of Douglas Johnston’s DIY2 1up kit.. on the card that i planned to have facing that one, i printed page 12 of the DIY2 kit and on the reverse side of THAT i printed my custom template of a one month quick view reference planner… so now, the front page has my to do list, the next two facing pages within (like opening a book) would have the current month planner from the DIY2 kit with sufficient room to write, and on the reverse side after that i would have the next month and any upcoming important dates marked and noted.

yes, i realize that sounds like geekism incarnate. well, the thing works great for me now, it is remarkable that such a simple concept and such a simple object could be of so much help, thanks fcg!

My Ultimate Pocket Notebook

This is my version of the Hipster. Plastic cover, binder ring, and hair elastic turn this stack of notecards into the most functional notebook I have ever had.
This is every day carry kit:
Left is my primary notebook that I use for my to-do lists, track my expenses, jot down ideas, etc. I tried out the D*I*Y Planner templates but I decided to simplify and do my own.
Right is my reference notebook that I study from, with notes I've written up that I put into 3x5 format so I can use my free time well.
Bottom is my Moleskine Memo Pocket for filing my receipts and holding backup supplies including a micro pen and pencil set, binder clip, extra cards, ring and elastic...
I currently write with either my Uni Jetstreams or the the very fine pointed Pilot G4 Tec.

I did a little write-up on my site:
